All About Good Ship Chronicles™
Brought to you by STARCORP, the gold standard in intergalactic corporate congolomorates and planetary syndicates
Good Ship Chronicles™is an episodic holovision program which documents day to day life onboard the Starcorp Delivery/Transport ship, the SS Gossamer. It was the hope of Starcorp that this documentary would generate viewer interest in the many starship oriented career fields they offer but has proven thus far to be unsuccessful.
Because of the extreme level of intrusiveness caused by constantly roving camera-bots and the inefficiency of crew members stopping periodically to tape "video diaries" a ship was needed which already had less than ideal productivity reports. Enter the SS Gossamer. This
ship has become known across the quadrant as "The only dead end in space". The phrase (made popular by many of the other Star Corps captains) refers to the, now pretty standard practice, of sending less than desirable Starcorp employees here to spend the remainder of their careers in relative obscurity. While many think of the Gossamer and her crew as a joke, the Captain of the ship, Hap Banning, finds leading this band of outcasts far more challenging and exciting than leading a more efficient and qualified crew could ever be (Some would say that it is just that brand of delusional self-indulgent egotism which landed Hap himself at the ship's helm). Although it was Starcorp's intention to edit out any gross incompetence or misconduct in production it was soon discovered that test audiences immediately fell in love with and could easily relate to the band of unlikely misfits.
The SS Gossamer herself is a Delivery/Transport, Exonumi class starship. The Exonumi class (which is no longer in production having been succeeded by the superior in nearly every way Exonumus Aeri) is a relatively large ship at 800 feet. It can carry roughly 2000 people Although the Gossamer rarely carries more than 400. Though not designed for combat, the ship is armed with a Tesla Fence deflection grid and two dedderon banks which allow it to fire dedderon beams and or missiles when necessary. Officially though, the Gossamer was built with an eye toward getting away from danger rapidly. The ship can reach speeds of 2/3 light speed using its propulsion engines but is also equipped with an Abhorrence Drive that allows it to travel 8000x the speed of light for a very short time and at the cost of a dangerous amount of the ship's resources. Obviously this drive is seen as an absolute last resort.
Hap Banning has been Captain of the SS Gossamer for 15 years now and his first officer Horace Givens has served under him for ten of those years. The vast majority of that time has been rather uneventful as it has been in the best interest of Starcorp to keep the Gossamer tucked safely away in a quieter sector of space. However the recent success of Good Ship Chronicles™ has compelled the administration to rethink their stance on the ship and its crew. After much deliberation it has been decided that the Gossamer will be scheduled for several deep space runs in the coming year, many of which will take it far and away from its beaten path. Needless to say ,Captain Banning is very excited at the prospect.
